Safe Areas
If you cannot safely evacuate the building, please report to a Safe Area. Safe Areas have been established in exterior stairwells (those that exit directly outside), with landings large enough for people to wait on. Stairwells have been identified by the Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake Fire Departments as the safest location in the building due to their life safety systems (ventilation, fire doors and access to outside).
Safe Areas are located throughout our campuses in all buildings with more than one floor. They are identified with a sign reading Safe Area.
It is important to note that the Fire Department will only remove people from Safe Areas if there is an immediate safety threat to the area. In all other cases, the Fire Department will prioritize finding and resolving the issue causing the fire alarm.
People waiting in Safe Areas are advised to stay where they are and wait for the all clear and to report their location to Security, or to call 911 if they are concerned about their safety.
