Fire Evacuation Procedures

A notice to evacuate will be given by the sounding of the fire alarm and/or through the most appropriate college Urgent Notification Systems.

Once the notice to evacuate has been issued, the following action must be taken:

  1. Classes and college operations must cease and individuals must immediately leave the building with the exception of designated college employees and contract Security personnel.
  2. If involved with hazardous research or doing a dangerous procedure, immediately shut down any operations that could create additional hazards if left unattended. Evacuate as soon as possible.
  3. When evacuating, take only critical personal items that you have with you. DO NOT stop at lockers, or other locations to pick up other items.
  4. Exit the building via the nearest safe exit. If you are unable to safely exit the building, proceed to a Safe Area.
  5. Move a safe distance away from the building. Avoid congregating at entrances or on roadways.

If you discover smoke or fire:

  • Leave the area immediately.
  • Use the nearest pull station to activate the fire alarm if it is safe to do so.
  • Ensure 911 has been called.
  • As you vacate a room ensure the door is closed (but not locked).
  • Use stairs only, do not use elevators.
  • Exit via nearest safe exit.
  • Do not re-enter the building until the alarm has been silenced and you are directed to do so by the Fire Department.

If you hear the fire alarm:

  • Leave the area immediately.
  • As you vacate a room ensure the door is closed (but not locked).
  • Use stairs only, do not use elevators.
  • Exit via nearest safe exit.
  • Do not re-enter the building until the alarm has been silenced and you are directed to do so by the Fire Department.
