Fire Evacuation Procedures
A notice to evacuate will be given by the sounding of the fire alarm and/or through the most appropriate college Urgent Notification Systems.
Once the notice to evacuate has been issued, the following action must be taken:
- Classes and college operations must cease and individuals must immediately leave the building with the exception of designated college employees and contract Security personnel.
- If involved with hazardous research or doing a dangerous procedure, immediately shut down any operations that could create additional hazards if left unattended. Evacuate as soon as possible.
- When evacuating, take only critical personal items that you have with you. DO NOT stop at lockers, or other locations to pick up other items.
- Exit the building via the nearest safe exit. If you are unable to safely exit the building, proceed to a Safe Area.
- Move a safe distance away from the building. Avoid congregating at entrances or on roadways.
If you discover smoke or fire:
- Leave the area immediately.
- Use the nearest pull station to activate the fire alarm if it is safe to do so.
- Ensure 911 has been called.
- As you vacate a room ensure the door is closed (but not locked).
- Use stairs only, do not use elevators.
- Exit via nearest safe exit.
- Do not re-enter the building until the alarm has been silenced and you are directed to do so by the Fire Department.
If you hear the fire alarm:
