Bike Theft Prevention
Bike to campus? Protect your bike from theft
Register your bike with the Niagara Regional Police Services (NRPS) through their 529 Garage program and join the world’s largest bike registration service. You will require the serial number, a photo and information about your bike including any identifiers (make, model, colour, size) or aftermarket additions. You can then submit this information through the NRPS 529 Garage.
Register your bike with the NRPS

Why should I register my bike?
In the unfortunate event that your bike is stolen, registering it in advance can assist police with returning your bike to you if its recovered.
Those who register will be provided with a 529 tamperproof shield with a unique code that lets thieves know your bike is registered. This can be obtained from any NRPS location. Love your bike? Keep it safe. Learn more on the 529 Garage website.
Locking and Safety Tips
- Always use a high-quality lock designed for your bike (hardened steel U-lock or steel chain with a padlock). Avoid inexpensive cable and chain locks. These are easier to cut off.
- Consider using two locks: one for the front wheel and frame (U-lock) and one from the rear wheel and frame (heavy – duty cable lock). Always lock your bike to the bike rack.
- Never lock only the top tube or only one wheel.
- Lock your bike in an identified bike rack location on Campus.
- Never leave your bike unattended for several days at a time.
- Never leave accessories like bags or items unattended with your bike.
