Shelter In Place
These situations could be weather related or environmental (e.g. accidental or intentional release of chemicals or toxins).
If you are outside when a Shelter in Place alert is issued, enter the nearest college building immediately.
Shelter in Place due to Hazardous Materials Release
A hazardous materials release may be caused by any of the following:
- An industrial accident
- A chemical spill
- A break in a natural gas pipeline
- A traffic accident
- Intentional/accidental actions of an individual
If a Shelter in Place alert is issued, follow all direction provided by first responders and Campus Security. Be prepared to:
- Close all exterior windows and doors
- Turn off all fans, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems
- If possible, take shelter in a windowless, interior room. A top floor location is preferable as chemicals heavier than air may seep into the basement or lower levels.
- Do not leave the building or go outside until the all clear is given by emergency responders or Campus Security.
Shelter in Place due to Severe Weather
The nature of the severe weather will determine the specific safety precautions. Follow all direction from first responders, Campus Security and/or the NC Urgent Notification System.
In the event of a tornado warning, be prepared to:
- Move to the lowest level of the building you are in and into a windowless, interior room or hallway where possible
- Stay away from windows, doors, and hazardous materials (e.g. gas canisters, propane, compressed air, heavy equipment, etc.)
- Take shelter under tables, desks or other objects that will protect against flying glass or debris. Cover your face and head with your arms and
- Keep calm. Wait for instructions from emergency personnel.
Avoid large open areas like gyms and cafeterias during a severe weather event as their structural integrity may be compromised.
If you are outside during a severe weather event, take shelter immediately. Do not stand under a tree. If there is no shelter available, find the lowest ground you can (e.g. ditch) and lay down. Protect your face and neck with your arms.
