Hold and Secure

A Hold and Secure alert may be issued due to an ongoing security-related situation outside, but not directly related to Niagara College (e.g. a security threat in the neighbouring subdivision).

A Hold and Secure alert will be issued based on direction from the Niagara Regional Police Service and will be communicated using the most appropriate NC Urgent Notification System. College Notification Systems should be monitored for updates throughout the situation.

Read the NC Hold and Secure Procedure

If you are outdoors when the Hold and Secure is called, enter the nearest college building immediately.

The majority of college entrance points are glass doors. Locking them will not necessarily prevent a person posing a threat from entering a building, but it might prevent an innocent person from seeking safety inside. To ensure that our College community members have the best chance to protect themselves during a Hold and Secure or Active Threat event, we will not lock exterior doors.

During a Hold and Secure alert, regular college operations may continue, unless directed otherwise. Monitor Urgent Notification Systems for updates.

Prepare yourself for a possible escalation from Hold and Secure to Active Threat (Get Out, Hide, Defend), by scanning and assessing your immediate surroundings. Ensure that you know where your nearest exit is and where you can take shelter to hide, should the situation escalate.

The all clear will be communicated through the Urgent Notification System.
