Important Course Documents

Each course in your program of study is defined by two very important documents: the Course Outline, and the Teaching and Learning Plan (TLP).

Course Outline

The Course Outline describes the specific skills that you need to acquire in a course to be successful. In the Outline, these are referred to as course outcomes, course objectives, and essential employability skills and your professor will structure their teaching and evaluations to help you develop them.

Course outlines also include lots of other important information, such as a course description, any pre- and co-requisites, an overview of evaluation types, a list of required textbooks or resources, and more.

Where can I find the course outline for my course?

Course outlines can be looked up using the NC Course Outline Tool.

Teaching and Learning Plan (TLP)

The Teaching and Learning Plan, commonly referred to as a TLP, is your roadmap for success in a course!  Every course you take at NC will have a TLP that has been created by your professor.

The format and structure of each TLP may differ slightly from professor to professor, but they should all contain the following information:

  • Your professor’s name and contact information
  • A class schedule and location, including lecture, seminar, lab, studio, off-site and/or online class meetings
  • A schedule of topics, required and recommended readings or resources, homework assignments and other learning activities, organized by class, by week or by course unit
  • A detailed breakdown of assignments and evaluations, including type, percentage weighting and due dates
  • While not a mandatory element, your TLP may also include descriptions of important program and course policies (i.e. late or missed assignment policy, class cancellation, attendance and lateness) and links to key student resources (i.e. the Library and Learning Commons; Health, Wellness and Accessibility Services; Indigenous Education at NC)
Where can I find the TLP for my course?

Your TLP will be posted to your Brightspace course site by the first day of classes. It can be found in the Course Information section. Jump to the Brightspace Courses and Accessing Course Content chapter for more information.

Important:

Review each TLP carefully! It will help you understand your professor’s expectations and will assist you in planning your schedule and setting your priorities.
