Sad News – Student Death

College flags have been lowered to honour the memory of Jeff (Jack) McKinnon who passed away suddenly on Friday April 28, 2023.  Jeff was known to friends and colleagues as Jack. He recently completed his studies in the Broadcasting: Radio, Television and Film program and was working as an on-air producer for the local Bell Media stations.  He was excited to be realizing his dream of working in rock radio and was recently offered a regular on-air shift at 97.7 HTZ-FM.

Jack was respected by faculty, staff and students who admired his dedication, his gracious nature and enthusiasm. Affectionately known as Uncle Jack (his on-air persona), he made returning to school as a second career look fun and exciting. Jack was a respected colleague at Niagara College Residences and was also elected by the student population as the Director of Media on the 2022-2023 NCSAC Board of Directors. Jack also began working as a part-time Residence Services Representative at the front desk of the Welland Residence & Conference Centre in July 2021. Jack’s personality quickly endeared him to all of the Residence’s guests and visitors, as Jack was easy to talk with, and always had something on the go that was relatable to any student or guest who needed assistance or just an empathetic ear. Jack excelled at customer service and was often complemented by guests after their interactions, with most guests being surprised that a big, gruff, and tough-looking man could be such a teddy bear and very understanding. Jack was a team player through and through and could often be found working additional shifts to help out fellow staff members when they were in need and even took on a few additional shifts away from the front desk, assisting with minor maintenance tasks around the Residence from time to time. Jack will be missed by all the staff and students at the Residence.

Family has advised that according to Jeff’s wishes, cremation will take place soon with a Celebration of Life Gathering to honour his memory at this date and location:

Tuesday May 9 between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.

at the George Darte Funeral Home

585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines

Family has also asked that any donations be made to support mental health services or autism services.

Niagara College sends its deepest condolences to Jack’s family, friends, colleagues and faculty.
