New walking club encourages the NC community to get active on campus

A new walking club from Niagara College’s Athletics and Recreation department is encouraging all Knights to take a “30-minute body break” this summer. The club promotes a daily 30-minute walk around NC’s campuses to remind students and staff to make time for physical activity in nature every day.

“The walking group is a way to promote taking a break from work or studying and getting outside with colleagues and friends,” said Casey Montambault, Campus Recreation Coordinator. “It’s the perfect opportunity to get some fresh air and some vitamin D while talking and walking together.”

Montambault also noted that it’s important for the NC community to stay active during the day as many students and staff transition back to campus.

“Working from home was a huge adjustment for a lot of people where they could get up and move around more, or use their lunch breaks to walk pets or sit outside in the sun,” added Montambault. “Our group walks serve as a reminder that everyone still needs to take a break and what better way than getting outside and being active on campus.”

Advance registration is not required. Students and staff who would like to walk as a group can meet at the Athletics desk (at either campus) at 12 p.m. on weekdays to depart together and follow the suggested routes (below).

Since the club is informal, anyone wishing to walk at a different time, or from a different starting location, can do so.

Suggested routes

  • Starting at the Athletics entrance, walk towards the stoplights at First Ave.;
  • Turn right at stoplights and continue up First Ave. to Woodlawn Rd.;
