Military Connected College
Niagara College is committed to providing specialized services to support students with ties to the armed forces. This includes current serving members, veterans, and their immediate families, ensuring that service-related circumstances do not interfere with academic success.
Who is a military-connected student?
Military-connected students are those individuals with significant ties to the Department of National Defence (DND), Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) or who have served with a foreign military. There are six sub-categories of military-connected students:
- Current serving, Regular Force member
- Current serving, Primary Reservist
- Veteran
- Department of National Defence – Civil Servant
- Immediate family of CAF service member or Veteran; and
- Foreign Military Veteran
To properly recognize military-connected students at Niagara, we encourage you to self-identify with our Admissions Team upon accepting an offer.

At Niagara College, military service may be recognized as a source of prior learning for the purpose of obtaining academic credit. This assessment is viewed through the lens of specific program or course learning outcomes.
Please review our Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) page to learn more about the process and the potential relation to your military training and qualifications. This is the starting point for understanding your prior learning recognition.
Contact our Pathways Advisor if you have any questions about the process. You can submit a PLAR application before you are registered as a Niagara College student.
Students can request academic credit for both military experience and previous post-secondary education, if they meet Niagara’s residency requirement and all other criteria under the Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR) Procedure.

Financial Support
There are various military funding sources that you may be eligible to receive below to help with your educational costs.
- The Canadian Armed Forces has a number of paid education program to learn more visit: https://forces.ca/en/paid-education/.
- Veteran’s Affairs Canada may be able to help pay for your education after your career in the military to learn more about the program or to apply online visit: https://www.veterans.gc.ca/en/education-and-jobs/go-back-school/education-and-training-benefit.
- If you are in-service looking to participate in an approved Self-Development Program (SDP) or an approved Individual Learning Plan (ILP) you are encouraged to visit: https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/corporate/policies-standards/canadian-forces-military-personnel-instructions/canadian-armed-forces-self-development-program-cafsdp.html.
- If you are looking for post-service funding like the Education and Training Benefit (ETB), this is funding that helps you to transition to civilian life or pursue post-secondary education. - Project Hero Scholarship at Niagara College helps to support children of Canadian soldiers who were killed while serving in an active military mission.

Niagara College’s Health, Wellness and Accessibility Services offers a single location, on both campuses, for support with physical and mental health, personal support and assistance with disability-related needs.

Niagara College’s Health Services provides health care for students. We have a team of Registered Nurses and Physicians on staff to provide primary health care, by appointment, for students unable to access their family doctor or primary health care supports.
