Nimisha Sumathi receives the President’s Engagement Award from Steve Hudson, vice-president Academic and Learner Services, and Lesley Calvin, manager of the Centre for Student Engagement and Leadership.
Student engagement took centre stage on April 1 at the second annual l Niagara College Volunteer and Leadership Awards.
Hosted by the Centre for Student Engagement and Leadership, the April 1 event recognized the hard work and dedication of students to campus engagement, student leadership and all areas of campus life, publicly acknowledging students who have dedicated their time to being involved and/or volunteering both on- and off-campus.
CSEL manager Lesley Calvin noted that the event was significant for the College as it illustrated the level of involvement students have at the College and how it increases each year.
“We have the unique position in the CSEL of receiving NCVLA nominations from the many service and academic areas, and the pride that the NC staff nominators feel for their students is impressive and inspirational,” said Calvin, who noted that many staff members full letters of support and documentation to back up why their student should win.
“When the student winners are announced, the cheers, smiles and tears of joy make for a very fun and emotional night. Seeing the students and staff cheer for each other and collect their awards with pride shows to us how impactful it is to celebrate our students achievements and involvement, inside the class room, out on the field, on campus and in the community.”
