Niagara College continues to expand its global reach in healthcare education by collaborating with international partners to deliver innovative, hands-on learning experiences.
From April 21 to 29, faculty members from Niagara College’s Myhal School of Nursing delivered a series of interactive sessions for nursing students and healthcare professionals in India, in collaboration with NC’s partner INSCOL. This impactful initiative supports global healthcare development while inspiring global learners to explore education opportunities at NC.
In five days, Professors Alison Cousineau and Jeffrey Ko visited three major cities — Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Chandigarh — and engaged with more than 400 students and professionals. The sessions highlighted cutting-edge topics, such as virtual reality (VR) in healthcare and modern infection control practices–demonstrating NC’s commitment to innovation in learning.
By sharing expertise and sparking meaningful conversations, the NC team helped elevate best practices and inspire future leaders in nursing.
“One of the most memorable and rewarding moments of the trip was witnessing the enthusiasm and curiosity of the students as they engaged with our applied learning tools,” said Ko. “Observing their fascination and seeing the concepts come to life in a hands-on environment affirmed the effectiveness of experiential learning. They were particularly intrigued by how these methods help bridge the gap between theory and real-world practice, offering them new perspectives on clinical education.”
Among the hands-on learning tools demonstrated by the NC team were a fluorescent tracer for infection control used to show germ spread and help individuals refine their hand-washing technique; a VR headset with simulation software that immersed participants in realistic clinical scenarios; and a geriatric suit that simulates the physical effects of aging, giving students a glimpse into the daily challenges older adults may face.
Niagara College and INSCOL have collaborated on initiatives in India since 2010, with a significant expansion of activities over the past six months.
“By working with Niagara College, we provide nurses with high-quality education and training opportunities, helping them achieve their career goals,” said INSCOL’s CEO Pukhraj Singh Gujral. “Through this partnership, we aim to highlight the benefits of studying at Niagara College and promote nursing opportunities in Canada. Additionally, the feedback from NC faculty helps us continuously improve our efforts in preparing our students for their studies in Canada.”
NC faculty professional development
By taking part in these initiatives, NC faculty gain valuable insights into international students’ experiences and how to best support them.
“What inspired me most to take part in this initiative was the opportunity to better understand our international students, immerse myself in their culture, and grow as an educator,” said Cousineau. “It expanded my perspective and deepened my understanding of global nursing practices, and the challenges faced in different parts of the world. At the same time, it allowed me to share my skills and insights in a meaningful way.”
Initiatives like this reflect the College’s continued focus on bringing Niagara to the world–through collaboration, innovation, and education that reaches across borders.
Faculty and staff interested in contributing to Niagara College’s Global Reach strategic initiatives are encouraged to speak with their supervisors about opportunities to engage with the International Division.
