It’s only been five years since he graduated from the Artisan Distilling program, but  Lokesh Khismatrao is Head Distiller at Tumbleweed Spirits Craft Distillery in British Columbia. We caught up with this recent alumnus and asked about his current role, career highlights and memories of NC. Here s what he had to say:

NC programs

Artisan Distilling in 2020 and Hospitality – Hotel and Restaurant Operations (Co-op) in 2019.

Current role

I am currently the Head Distiller at Tumbleweed Spirits Craft Distillery in Osoyoos, B.C. As Head Distiller, my role encompasses the entire production process, from raw ingredients to the final bottled product. Our portfolio includes five distinct whiskies, along with three contract whiskies, bringing our total whisky offerings to eight.

One of my key initiatives at Tumbleweed has been the establishment of our barrel-aging program, which now holds over 60 whisky barrels and more than five brandy barrels. In addition to our whisky program, we produce a range of flavored vodkas, moonshines, and gins.

Recently, we launched our sister brand, Los Campadre, which specializes in ready-to-drink bottled cocktails. Our current lineup features Raspberry Lemonade, Haskap Margarita, Espresso Martini, and Old Fashioned. A major milestone was achieved at the 2025 Canadian Whisky Awards, where Los Campadre Old Fashioned won the Best Whisky Cocktail in Canada, a proud accomplishment in my career.

Career highlights

My journey in the industry began at Limited Distillery in Niagara-on-the-Lake, where I gained hands-on experience in whisky, moonshine, gin, and vodka production. Committed to continuous learning, I have pursued various certifications, including Whisky Ambassador, Gin Ambassador, WSETLevel 2 in Spirits, and Jameson Irish Whiskey Taster.

Influence and inspiration

My journey into the alcohol industry began with my background as a competitive bartender in India. I participated in 25 competitions, winning one and securing runner-up in another, while learning valuable lessons from the 23 I didn’t win.

Throughout my bartending career, I experimented with alcoholic infusions, exploring different flavors and techniques. This passion for understanding spirits led me to pursue a formal education in distillation at Niagara College’s Artisan Distilling program, where I was part of the second batch of students.

Since then, my career has been filled with both challenges and opportunities, each contributing to my growth in the industry. Now in my sixth year of alcohol production, I continue to push boundaries, refine my craft, and embrace new learning experiences that shape my journey.

Standout NC experiences

NC did play an important role in teaching me the basics which is the key role in shaping the career, as I always believe in one thing: if your basics are strong, you can definitely make it, no matter the difficulties.

For me, extracurricular activities took a different path. During my time at Niagara College, I worked as a Tasting Room Associate at the Teaching Winery, Brewery, and Distillery. This role provided me with hands-on experience while allowing me to learn from industry professionals. I took every opportunity to expand my knowledge by engaging with Winemaker Gavin (at the time) and Head Distiller David Dickson, often seeking insights and volunteering in the production room. While much of my initial work involved cleaning, I embraced it as a valuable learning experience, knowing it was a crucial first step in understanding the production process.

Influences and inspiration

I would also like to acknowledge two professors who played a significant role in my journey–Brian Beccario from the Hospitality program and Head Distiller David Dickson from the Artisan Distilling program. Their guidance, mentorship, and industry insights were instrumental in shaping my professional approach to hospitality and distilling. I am deeply grateful for their support, and their teachings continue to influence my career today.

Words of wisdom

My advice is simple: Stay focused on your goals and always listen to your professors; they have a wealth of knowledge and experience. Approach learning with humility, as their guidance will equip you with the skills and confidence needed to navigate the challenges of the industry.
