In support of its commitment to being an inclusive and welcoming community, and in response to Bill 166 (the Strengthening Accountability and Student Supports Act), Niagara College has updated its policies, developed learning resources, and developed new reporting processes for ending hate and racism on campus.

Niagara College is committed to fighting hate and racism. Several policies and procedures exist to offer protection and guidance on how you can respond if you witness or experience hate or racism on campus.

Information for students, employees and visitors can be found on our Policies website: www.niagaracollege.ca/policies/anti-hate-resources.

Reporting an incident

If you see something, say something.

Students and employees who witness or experience any incidents of hate or racism at NC may report the incident either in person or through NC’s new online reporting form. For in person reporting, students can report an incident to Campus Safety or by making an appointment at the Student Rights and Responsibilities Office (SRRO). Employees can also report to Campus Safety or can contact their human resources consultant.

In addition, as a new way to report, all students and employees now have the option to use an online form to report it confidentially. If you choose this approach, you can ask that your report be forwarded anonymously to the investigating department. This form can be used to report multiple forms of hate or racism. Examples of things you can report could include, among other things, racist or hateful graffiti, hateful slurs or hate speech, harassment or discrimination based on aspects of your identity (e.g. indigeneity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, racial or ethnic identity, and disability).

You can also use the “Report Hate and Racism” icon through My Applications in the MyNC Portal.

In the case that you or someone else is in immediate danger, please call emergency services at 911 or Campus Security at (905) 735-2211 ext. 6999.

Support is available

The new webpage lists various ways that students and employees can access a breadth of support on campus.

Learning opportunities

We are committed to proactively educating students and employees about ways to identify and end hate and racism on campus. You can find all upcoming learning opportunities on the EDI Events Calendar or by following EDI on NC Engage.

Niagara College recently purchased a series of EDI learning modules from Western University which address various forms of hate. The College is currently working to customize the modules for NC students and employees. Stay tuned for an announcement.

We hope you will join in our commitment to ending hate and take the time to browse the resources and policies on the new site.
