Jon Downing, Professor in Niagara College’s Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program, was interviewed by Stephanie Vivier on CKTB. During the interview, Downing highlighted the recent achievements of Brewmaster students at the 2024 U.S. Open College Beer Championship and the 2024 U.S. Open Beer Championship.
Downing also discussed the upcoming student-led beer festival, Project Brew: Medieval Faire, set for August 9 at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus. He mentioned that one of the award-winning beers, Cherry Blossom, will be featured at the event, along with 18 other student-crafted beers available for guests to sample.
When asked about the program’s success and its consistent award-winning record, Downing said:
“Next September will be our 15th anniversary, that’s over 600 students going through the program. So, [over that time], we’ve been practicing a lot, we’ve made…thousands of different kinds of beers that students have designed as well as the ones we make ourselves, so it’s a lot of experience and knowledge gained by students. The students…love making the beer and look forward to careers in the industry.”
