Two Niagara College educators have been recognized with Educator of the Year Awards from the Niagara College Student Administrative Council (NCSAC).

The 2023-2024 recipients are Angela Hayes, a full-time professor from NC’s Early Childhood Education program, and Rebecca Moore, a part-time professor from NC’s Esthetician program, who were honoured at NCSAC’s Night of Excellence on April 11.

The awards have been presented to one full-time and one part-time faculty member since 2003 to honour educators who have made a difference in the lives of students. This year, NCSAC received 142 student submissions.

“The Educator of the Year Awards is always a very exciting time of the year as we get to see, from so many students, just how incredible the professors are here at Niagara College,” said NCSAC President Dipal Patel. “This year’s winners – Rebecca and Angela – are truly remarkable and inspirational teachers! I want to personally thank them for helping their students achieve their dreams.”

Hayes was commended by student nominators for being an engaging and supportive educator.

“Professor Hayes is an incredibly kind and engaging professor. She is always quick to offer help, follows up on information/questions from class, marks in a timely manner, and offers feedback that is insightful and constructive,” said one nominator. “I feel confident to enter the field of early childhood education because of the knowledge and skills she has taught me over the course of this program.”

Receiving recognition from her students is a point of pride for Hayes.

“I am so honoured to have been recognized because I am constantly reminding my Early Childhood Education students what a privilege and responsibility it is to be an educator and this award reinforces this,” said Hayes. “The fact that students, while out on placement and balancing final exams and assignments, took the time to write and submit nominations means everything to me.”

Moore was lauded for her positive and encouraging teaching style.

“You can ask her any question big or small and she is always happy to answer,” wrote a student nominator. “Mrs. Moore understands that everyone learns differently and gives many tips and tricks to help find what works best for you. She genuinely wants you to succeed in school and in life after the course is done.”

An NC alumna, Moore is honoured to be among NCSAC’s Educator of the Year award recipients.

“I am so honoured to be recognized by NCSAC as part-time educator of the year,” said Moore. “As Niagara College alumni, I have always loved the community of NC and was lucky to become part-time faculty this past September. Thank you to my students who took the time to nominate me and recognize my efforts and hard work.”
