Game Development graduate Ricardo Mohammed decided to turn his passion for video games into a career when choosing to attend Niagara College. After completing the program, Mohammed is left feeling confident in the dynamic knowledge and skillset he gained and is ready to take on any job within his field of study.
We catch up with Mohammed to learn about his most memorable and impactful moments as an NC Knight.
Tell us why you came to NC and how your dream has evolved?
I came to NC after finding out they have a Game Development program. I’ve been an avid fan of video games since I was three years old, and they continue to be a large part of my life and who I am. I started the program thinking I would be a programmer, but as time passed, I became more interested in 3D environment art and now my current dream is to work as an environment artist.
What is one thing you experienced at NC that you didn’t expect?
I didn’t expect how tight knit our final year class would be. The sense of camaraderie and community from the students and professors, everyone helping each other out and encouraging them to become better game developers, made every day a treat.
Now that you’re starting your career, what tools did NC give you to set you apart from your peers?
NC gave me the skills to be able to pursue what I felt was necessary to succeed in my field of work. The professors’ ability to take someone who has no knowledge of game development and make them proficient enough to make a career out of this field of study is incredible. I am forever grateful for their wisdom and support over the years. They taught me not only what I know today, but also what I don’t know, and that has allowed me to branch out on my own and succeed in whatever skills/tools I decide to learn and grow in next.
Who would you like to thank for helping make your NC journey and dream a reality?
First and foremost, my mother for working so hard to ensure that I would be able to succeed in school. I wouldn’t be where I am without her. My girlfriend who had to put up with years of complaints and whining during my time in the program and being there for me when times were tough. Finally, my professors who gave me the skills and foundation necessary to succeed in any area of game development.
What is your dream job? If you’ve already landed it, what is it?
My dream job is to work as a 3D environment artist at Intrepid Studios, a company making a very large-scale MMORPG.
What are you most looking forward to about becoming an NC Alumni?
I’m looking forward to hearing my class’s success stories as they start their own journeys into their careers and seeing where everyone ends up. It’s a new chapter in our lives but I hope the time we all spent at NC is one we’ll never forget.
