We are excited to introduce the NC Cares ‘Donor Spotlight’ series. The series features brief interviews with some of our NC donors about why they support the College’s United Way workplace campaign. Everyone’s reason for giving is unique, often personal, but all are connected by a common thread – to help others in need.
The following is the first spotlight featuring Adam Weaver, Professor in the School of Hospitality & Tourism.
Please share with us why you donate to the United Way through NC’s workplace campaign? What motivates you?
For me, having a family and a young child has offered added perspective. It is difficult for me to fathom that there are children, the same age as my daughter, who routinely struggle to get enough to eat. And yet that is the case. And these folks are our friends and neighbours. The above photo is of my daughter, Ida, who drew a picture of the sun because, for her, helping others is “sunny”. Ida is four and a half years old.
Do you have a special connection to the United Way?
My appreciation of the work of the United Way is something that is more recent, and is probably related to my return to Canada after nearly 15 years of residing overseas.
In your opinion, what is the most important work of the United Way?
The breadth of the work done by the United Way impresses me. There is an appreciation there of connections — and that complex, societal problems are interwoven. However, I am most partial to the efforts of the United Way to reduce food insecurity.
Why do you feel supporting the United Way is important?
There is meaning and purpose in giving to those who live far away from us. But I am drawn to the local nature of the work of the United Way. There is too much hardship that is (too) close to home.
If you were to share a message with colleagues, who may be thinking of donating, what would you say?
Your support of the United Way helps others who may be closer to you, geographically and personally, than you might initially think. I would ask that colleagues consider the quiet and private suffering that may be taking place in their own neighbourhoods, behind closed doors and curtains.
Support NC Cares
It’s not too late to give to the 2022 NC Cares United Way workplace campaign, which runs through December 9. Donations can be made through NC’s online payroll deduction portal or United’s Way’s online form.
The NC community also continues to host on-campus fundraising initiatives and events for both employees and students this fall. Please watch for details on InsideNC.
