The St. Catharines Standard featured a piece on those in the Niagara community who are turning their efforts towards fighting climate change. Among them, a group of passionate, environmentally-conscious Niagara College students.
Writer Marin Scotten uses the term “eco-anxiety” which many people have felt as a result of the release of the 2021 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlighting the urgency of the climate crisis. Local expert Jennifer Good explains that the pandemic has been a time of disconnection and fear, making it challenging for young people to take collective action in the climate movement.
Despite these challenges, a group of sustainability-minded NC students were among those making change locally. Lindsay Taylor, Environmental Technician program student at NC (and 2021 alumna, Business – General) and a group of students formed ncStewards, a club whose goal is to promote and engage in practices that further the objective of sustainability on campus and within the Niagara community.
The group meets weekly for socially distanced hikes, and virtually to work on sustainability initiatives in the region.
