NC's Big Move teammates Joanne Maltby, Nick Vesprini, Charlene Austin, Joanna Cielen and Mike Pasquale participate in a training ride on Sept. 14, 2021.

A group of dedicated Niagara College employees have been meeting weekly this summer to train for the Big Move Cancer Ride, September 3 to 19. Beginning at Rockway Community Centre in St. Catharines on Tuesday evenings, the group sets out on a 20km route, cycling through vineyards and countryside to build their stamina for the big day.

For the third year, NC organizers Joanne Maltby, Janet Pizzati and Mike Pasquale are inviting staff, faculty and students – amateur and experienced cyclists alike – to join the Niagara College team at the Big Move Cancer Ride.

With just two weeks to go, it’s not too late to join the NC team or support their efforts by donating. All proceeds raised from this Niagara Health fundraiser go towards the Walker Family Cancer Centre. Over the past two years, the NC team has raised over $8,500 for the cause.

Frank DeChellis, professor and head coach of the Knights men’s soccer team, is among those riding this year. “It’s been nice to meet up with fellow NC staffers, and the Rockway meeting place provides a great launch point to discover the beautiful scenery and perfect riding roads of wine country and North Pelham. I hope these rides continue in some format even after The Big Move has come and gone.”

DeChellis adds, “The attitude of the group makes for a great activity with fellow Knights away from our everyday duties. I always enjoy meeting people from other areas of the College.”

The next training ride dates are:
Tuesday, August 24 @ 6 p.m.
Tuesday, August 31 @ 6 p.m.
