The Centre for Student Engagement and Leadership (CSEL) has found a new way to connect with Niagara College students in a virtual world with the release of its first-ever podcast entitled Go To College They Said.
Launched on May 7, the podcast offers an all access pass for students to listen, learn and start to lead with their best professional foot forward.
Sarah Singleton, Centre for Student Engagement and Leadership program coordinator, said the recent shift to remote work and online programming presented an opportunity for staff to try something new that would engage students in a different format.
“Our podcast, which is geared to students looking to make the most of their time in college, offers another avenue for CSEL to support, educate and encourage students on how to check all the boxes that lead to student success outside of the classroom,” said Singleton, who records the podcast with colleagues and guest speakers.
Singleton thinks of the podcast episodes as conversations that students can sit in on while going about their daily activities – walking, running, cooking – especially since the podcast is available online at any given time.
Go To College They Said is themed around what students expect to get out of a college experience – hence the name of the podcast – and features tips and advice from NC staff and alumni, as well as industry professionals.
Four episodes have been released so far including:
- “Welcome to Go To College They Said”;
- “You’ll be productive they said: Defining productivity during quarantine with tips to work and learn from home”;
- “You’ll elevate your LinkedIn they said: A conversation with NC alumna Madi Fuller”; and
- “You’ll succeed in a virtual environment they said: Advice from NC academic advisors”.

Future topics will include the juggle of school-work-life balance, setting yourself apart by developing skills outside of the classroom, gaining experience to build your co-curricular record, perfecting your resume and interview skills, and crushing it in college.
Singleton said the podcast has already received several five-star ratings from listeners and hopes that it will become a long-standing addition to CSEL’s programming.

Students, as well as interested faculty and staff, are encouraged to subscribe to the podcast on one of its online platforms to listen to the latest episodes as they are released.
