ITS Update: Important change for accessing network files remotely

A message from Information Technology Services:

On April 4, ITS sent a CampusNotice about a new service called MyWorkDrive for accessing network files from the N: and G: drives. Please note that MyWorkDrive will be the only method for accessing network files remotely as of June 1, 2020.

MyWorkDrive can be accessed using this link – remotedrives.niagaracollege.ca. Documentation about how to set up and use the product is available on the ITS Support site: ITS.niagaracollege.ca.

Why is ITS switching exclusively to MyWorkDrive now?

ITS is switching to MyWorkDrive to reduce service costs and provide the best possible solution to Niagara College employees currently working remotely.

The application is a cost-friendly solution and one that allows easy browser-based access to the N: and G: drives basically the same as on campus access, except you work through a browser instead of File Explorer, providing greater functionality than the previous method.

ITS is making the switch by the end of May before an existing Microsoft licence is up for renewal on June 1. This licence was previously used for services that are no longer required – our former remote file access solution was part of this licence and provided to the College at no additional cost at the time.

Does this affect faculty and staff using VPN access?

No, a VPN solution negates the need for using a remote file access application and anyone currently using VPN to access network files will be able to continue doing so.

Note: VPN is only available to those using college issued desktop or laptop computers at home. Many employees are using their own personal computers and for those, VPN is not permitted for security reasons as personal devices are considered unmanaged resources.
