The Niagara Independent featured NC’s new women’s basketball head coach, Chris Rao, who has made the homecoming to Welland after five years coaching on the east coast. Rao returns to Niagara where his father, Chris Rao, is coaching the Brock University women’s basketball team.

Rao Sr. first coached son in soccer, who quickly took interest in basketball. Rao Jr. took on his first assistant coaching role – helping his father – as a grade 9 student at Notre Dame coaching a grade 7 team in Welland.

Rao Jr. says that he jumped at the chance to coach the NC women’s team. Father Mike says of his son, “I’m proud of him. I’ve got to be the oldest hire ever at 60, and he’s one of the youngest to be hired.”

Rod Mahood asserts that the father-son duo are raising the profile of the Rao name in basketball in Welland and Niagara.
