The t-shirt graphic in support of NC's first sponsored refugee was designed by Jessica Veltri, student graphic designer. The words "We are We, We are NC" represents equality and interconnectedness despite geographic boundaries. The images within the globe, indistinct faces, are intentionally indistinguishable by gender, race, religion or class.

The School of Trades and International have partnered to sponsor a student refugee – a first for Niagara College. T-shirts in support of the initiative will be on sale at Niagara Day.

Niagara Day marks the first major fundraising initiative in support of Niagara College’s first student refugee who will begin their studies in the School of Trades in the Carpentry and Renovation Technician program in the Fall Term 2019.

The School of Trades, championed by associate dean Jeff Murrell, and in collaboration with the International Department, has partnered with the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) to participate in the Student Refugee Program (SRP).

The SRP combines resettlement to Canada with access to post-secondary education for young refugees. Students from the SRP do not receive scholarships to study in Canada but are sponsored for one year and receive basic financial and social support from their sponsoring group.

This program is of significant importance to the School of Trades and to NC, as together we will positively impact someone’s life through the power of education. The SRP allows us, the NC community, to showcase the collective values we hold high in our vision. This initiative is a clear embodiment of our NC DNA.

Our institution can take great pride in undertaking this important humanitarian project. We will not only help one individual to transition and transform their life, but this program has the potential to have a multiplier effect on our students. This initiative can impact NC students by awakening feelings of global citizenship and community stewardship to help shape their world view and who they become upon graduation, ultimately inspiring community and global leaders.

T-shirts for sale at Niagara Day

Show your support this Niagara Day by purchasing a t-shirt – available outside the gym for $15 – in which 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the SRP fund in support of the living costs of NC’s first student refugee. The t-shirt graphic was designed by Jessica Veltri, student graphic designer with Be World Ready.

The image, with the words “We are We, We are NC,” was designed by Veltri depicting a concept Murrell has in mind: that we are all equal and interconnected despite geographic boundaries. The images within the globe were intentionally designed as indistinct face profiles, indistinguishable by gender, race, religion or class.
