Tips off January 11 in Welland: Ontario’s oldest BB tournament features 16 competing high schools


The 62nd Welland Tribune Boys’ Basketball Tournament, presented by Niagara College (NC), tips off on January 11 with teams from 16 local Niagara Region high schools contending for the championship in Ontario’s oldest high school basketball tournament.

“We are pleased to once again continue our support of such a strong local sporting tradition,” said Matthew Davies, NC’s director of athletics and recreation. “We are excited to welcome high school athletes and their families to our campus, where they will have the opportunity to learn about the many academic and athletic opportunities offered at Niagara College.”

Participating teams include Notre Dame, Ridgeway-Crystal Beach, Denis Morris, Westlane, Niagara Christian Collegiate, Thorold, Holy Cross, Sir Winston Churchill, Centennial, EL Crossley, St. Michael, Port Colborne, AN Myer, Lakeshore Catholic, Jean Vanier, and Governor Simcoe.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for local basketball players to showcase their skills against the best that the Niagara Region has to offer,” said Don Larman, tournament co-chairperson. “As the oldest high school basketball tournament in Ontario, we would like to thank Niagara College for their continued support of this annual event.”

The tournament begins on January 11 runs through until January 14th, with games being played at the following times and venues:

Notre Dame: Jan. 11 – 3:30 p.m., 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 8 p.m.; Jan. 12 – 3:30 p.m., 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 8 p.m.
Jan. 14 – 5:30 p.m. (consolation Championship), 7:30 p.m. (tournament championship)

Centennial: Jan. 11 – 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m.; Jan. 12 – 3:30 p.m., 5 p.m.

Jean Vanier: Jan. 11 – 3:30 p.m., 5 p.m.; Jan. 12 – 12:45 p.m., 2:15 p.m.

Niagara College Welland Campus Athletic Centre: Jan. 13 – 3:30 p.m.; 5 p.m.; 6:30 p.m.; 8 p.m.
