The College’s School of Trades is shining the spotlight on student success after hosting its first annual Awards Night.
Showcasing the future of the trades industry, the event recognized student accomplishments and contributions through awards given from donors and Niagara College staff members. About 30 monetary awards were presented, valued at more than $20,000, in addition to several non-monetary student awards. Students and faculty from the College’s School of Trades attended as well as several industry partners.
“Our first annual School of Trades Awards Night was another way for us bring students and the industry together,” said Tim McLeod, associate dean of the College’s School of Trades. “There are great opportunities within the trades and a need for people with skills. And at Niagara College, our students develop skills that they can take with them wherever they go.”
President Dan Patterson applauded the students’ achievements and spoke about the high demand for a skilled workforce, as rapid change and constant developments in technology transform the workplace.
“Technology and skilled trades offer a world of career opportunities that pay well and are exciting, interesting and enjoyable” he said. “Whether you’re graduating this spring and moving on to the exciting world of work or continuing on your educational path, I congratulate you on your success and wish you all the best.”
Industry guest Bob Benner, owner of Hamill Machine Company, also addressed the crowd. “Being a Niagara College graduate gives you choice, choice to become a skilled tradesperson in your chosen field, or perhaps even an entrepreneur. You have the skills you need to succeed,” he said. “My goal is to connect business with new graduates. My vision is to see each and every one of you to find employment in your chosen trade.”
The event’s emcee was NC Motive Power alumni Farhan Khalid.
The invite-only event was held on March 22 at The Core.
