Every Friday, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion will share a film recommendation that will support students, staff and faculty in enhancing their understanding of equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility.
Students, staff and faculty can access all films featured for free through the NC Libraries and Learning Commons.
To mark Diwali, this week’s feature film is Lights for Gita.
Eight-year-old Gita can’t wait to celebrate Divali, the Hindu festival of lights, in her new home. But it’s nothing like New Delhi, where she comes from. The weather is cold and grey and a terrible ice storm cuts off the power, ruining her plans for a party. Obviously, a Divali celebration now is impossible. Or is it?
As Gita experiences the glittering beauty of the icy streets outside, the traditional festival of lights comes alive in a sparkling new way.
Lights for Gita is part of the NFB’s Talespinners collection. Created for children aged five to nine, Talespinners uses vibrant animation to bring popular stories from a wide range of cultural communities to the screen.
After viewing the film, we encourage you to reflect on the following questions:
