Welland Campus – Teaching from the Inside Out: Navigating Change, Rethinking and Redefining Our Role – In Education

Education is changing faster than many of the systems and practices around it. This four-session program gives educators space to make sense of those changes, reconnect with what they believe about teaching and learning, consider student needs, and make personal choices about how they want their teaching to evolve.
Who is this program for?
This program is for faculty who are interested in thinking more deeply about their role as educators in a changing post-secondary environment.
It may be especially valuable if you are:
• noticing that some of the ways we have traditionally taught, assessed, or engaged students no longer work as well as they once did;
• wondering how AI, changing student needs, workforce expectations, and other pressures should or should not influence your teaching;
• interested in examining the beliefs and assumptions that shape your teaching choices;
• looking for ways to become more intentional about the learning experiences you design;
• curious about the kind of educator you want to be as higher education continues to change.
This is not a program about being told how you should teach. It is an opportunity to examine what you believe, consider what is changing, and make more personal choices about your own practice. You do not need to be an expert in AI, educational theory, or learning design; however, you will be encouraged to reflect, question, discuss, and experiment with your thinking. Please note that you may be asked to complete “homework” between sessions that will take no more than one hour of your time total.
Four Sessions
This program is designed to run over four sessions to allow for a connected learning opportunity where each session builds on the other. Your presence in all sessions matters not only for your own learning, but also for the learning of the group. Over the four sessions, we hope to create enough continuity and trust for participants to move beyond sharing strategies and into some of the more interesting questions underneath them.
We will begin by examining some of the assumptions that have shaped teaching and learning, including our own beliefs about students, learning, and the educator’s role. From there, we will explore what is changing around us and what those changes challenge us to reconsider. The later sessions are about who you want to be as an educator in this environment, and how that might show up in the learning you design and your teaching practices.
Here is how the learning journey is envisioned:
Session 1 – What do I believe and what has shaped that?
Session 2 – What is changing, and what is mine to influence?
Session 3 – Who do I want to be as an educator within all the change that is happening?
Session 4 – What does that look like in my classroom, my curriculum, and my expectations of students?
