Navigating Tough Conversations

November 16 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am

Tough conversations are an inevitable part of teaching, but they don’t have to be confrontational or overly challenging. This session explores practical approaches for navigating challenging conversations with students, from providing difficult feedback and addressing academic misconduct, to responding thoughtfully to the group when course content, current events, EDI related topics, and decolonization generate disagreements or discomfort. We’ll examine how power, identity, trust, and communication shape these conversations, and consider ways to remain both supportive and appropriately accountable. Participants will leave with tools and approaches they can put into practice, including strategies for framing conversations, asking effective questions, setting boundaries, and responding when conversations don’t go as planned.

Registration is required.
