The Centre for Teaching & Learning Innovation at College of the North Atlantic and the Centre for Academic Excellence at Niagara College invite faculty to participate in a pilot coaching series where you will have the opportunity to experience coaching as a ‘coachee’ while learning how to apply coaching approaches in your teaching.

At the end of the series, we expect you will walk away with:

  • Enhanced awareness of coaching philosophy, related research, and specific coaching approaches.
  • Increased awareness about the degree to which you currently apply coach-like practices in your interactions with students (behaviors, beliefs and thoughts).
  • Tools and strategies to expand and deepen your coach-approach in the classroom.
  • A new community of practice with whom you can share ideas and experiences about the impact of coach-approaches in your classroom.
  • A certificate of completion for your professional portfolio.

The Series consists of:

  • 6 Virtual Workshops – 6.5 hours (One 1.5-hour workshop to start, five 1-hour workshops after)
  • Pre-work/Reflection/Feedback – 6 hours (estimated 1 hour per workshop)
  • One-to-one Virtual Coaching – 3 hours (three sessions at 1 hour each)
  • Focus Group – 1 hour

Total participation: Approximately 16.5 hours from March – November 2021

Workshops will focus on key coaching topics and provide opportunity for application and collaborative learning and will be offered via a video conferencing platform. As well, participants will be offered the opportunity to work with a coach for 3 one-hour coaching sessions (to be scheduled during the semester) at the participants’ and coach’s convenience (it is suggested that participants schedule coaching sessions 1 and 2 between 11 March and 19 May and one between 26 August – 30 September 2021).

Participants are asked to complete a pre- and post-assessment about your knowledge of coaching and your learning as a result of the workshops and coaching sessions. A focus group session will be scheduled in November 2021 to talk about your experiences as a group and to collect high-level themes to inform future offerings.

What is Coaching?

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” During our workshops, we will explore more about what coaching is and is not, provide tools and opportunities to apply new knowledge, and share research on how coaching supports teachers and their instruction.
