Niagara College will join postsecondary institutions across Canada in recognizing Consent Awareness Week, Sept. 14 to 18.
The annual national campaign promotes understanding of consent, healthy relationships and sexual violence prevention. It highlights the importance of clear, voluntary and ongoing consent in all interactions, while encouraging open conversations, education and community action to help build safer, more respectful environments.
NC’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team is encouraging students and employees to participate in Consent Awareness Week through a series of activities and events focused on dialogue, education and action.
Upcoming events and learning opportunities
Community Connections
Sept. 15 | 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. | Applied Health Foyer, Welland Campus
Community organizations from across the Niagara Region will be on campus to raise awareness, engage in conversation and connect the NC community with local support services.
The event will be set up as an information fair, allowing participants to drop in, learn about resources and make connections with community organizations. Registration is not required.
Consent Awareness Week Table
Sept. 17 | 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. | Cafeteria entrance, Daniel J. Patterson Campus
Stop by the Consent Awareness Week Table to learn more about on-campus and community-based resources and take part in activities designed to enhance your understanding of consent.
Take Back the Night
Sept. 17 | 6:30 to 9 p.m. | Market Square, downtown St. Catharines
Join NC and the Niagara Sexual Assault Centre for Take Back the Night, an annual event raising awareness about sexual and gender-based violence.
The event will feature speakers and live music followed by a candlelight march through downtown St. Catharines.
Residence visits
NC’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team will also visit student residences during Consent Awareness Week:
- Sept. 14: Welland residence
- Sept. 16: Niagara-on-the-Lake residence
The team will set up information tables and be available to speak with students about resources and supports available at NC and in the community.
NC Libraires and Learning Centres display
During the week of Sept. 14, the NC Libraries and Learning Centres at both campuses will feature displays with curated print books and eBooks and other resources connected to this important day.
Consent Awareness Week is an opportunity for everyone in the NC community to learn, ask questions and take action to help create a culture where consent, respect and healthy relationships are understood and valued.
