A newly rebranded student bursary is helping future careers take root at Niagara College.
NC has unveiled the Seed Fund, which helps support students in the School of Environment and Horticulture through bursaries for those facing financial need.
Formerly named the Basil Bursary, the financial award launched in 2016. It was named in honour of Basil, the former official cat of the College’s Teaching Greenhouse who passed away in 2019. Over the years, the bursary has been primarily funded through the sale of plush keychains featuring Basil’s likeness.
While keychain sales continue to support the newly renamed fund, the College community and the public can now donate directly at the Teaching Greenhouse or online.
“The Seed Fund is a powerful way to support student success through the spirit of collective giving,” said Emily O’Connor, Development Officer. “Every contribution, no matter the size, helps remove financial barriers and provides students with the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. Together, we can plant the seeds for brighter futures.”
Evan DiValentino, Dean of Business and Environment, applauded the initiative.
“When you shop at the NC Teaching Greenhouse in Niagara-on-the-Lake, you already support applied learning through student-grown plants. Now, there’s a way to contribute directly, online or in store, to the Seed Fund to help students,” said DiValentino. “Every dollar makes a meaningful difference in our students’ futures and in the sectors they will serve after graduation.”

Donations may now be made directly to the Seed Fund online at:
