NC Business students are maximizing their returns to help their peers with the return of the NC Tax Clinic.
Starting Tuesday, March 10 and continuing every Tuesday morning until April 14, the student-led initiative will provide essential tax filing services to NC students with simple tax situations and modest incomes – free of charge.
This year’s tax clinic is a collaborative effort between 19 third-year Business Administration – Accounting students, who will serve as the primary tax preparers as part of their capstone course, and 25 Office Administration students who will manage the operational side of the clinic, including scheduling and client intake.
The clinic was first introduced last year as an experiential learning opportunity for students to apply their tax knowledge in a real-world setting while providing a useful service to other NC students.
“The clinic gives students an opportunity to apply what they have learned in their taxation courses in a practical setting. They gain experience using professional tax software, working directly with clients, reviewing financial documents, and ensuring compliance with CRA guidelines,” said Professor Kerri Simich. “In addition to technical tax knowledge, students also develop important professional skills such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and client service.”
The clinic will run Tuesdays from March 10 to April 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The clinic will operate out of Room W208 at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The clinic is expected to assist between 50 and 80 students during its six-week run.
Demand is already high, with over half of the available appointment slots filled before the first session. While a limited number of walk-ins may be accommodated depending on the day, students are encouraged to secure their time in advance.
