Mark your calendars for a month of great events this February!
Niagara College will honour and celebrate Black culture and achievement with events and activities for Black History Month in Canada.
The whole NC community – students and employees – are welcome to join as we celebrate the contributions of Black Canadians and African diasporic peoples. Through a series of events, activities and learning opportunities, the College will acknowledge their unique lived experiences and Black resilience.
February 11 – Winter Pop-up Market
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Welland Campus will host a pop-up market in the Applied Health Foyer. The market will showcase Black-owned businesses from across the region and budding NC student entrepreneurs.
The event is hosted by Black Owned 905 in partnership with NCSAC, EDI, and Community Relations and Events.
February 17 – ‘Words that Heal’ Poetry slam workshop
Cassandra Muileboom.
Students and employees are invited to a dynamic slam poetry workshop on February 17 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Room N018.
This workshop is open to all NC students and employees and will be facilitated by Cassandra Muileboom, a writer, speaker, and qualifying clinical psychoanalyst with a passion for poetry.
Whether you’ve written poetry before or are trying it for the first time, participants will be supported in a welcoming, non-judgmental environment, offering a chance to explore the healing power of words.

February 24 – Niagara’s Freedom Trail: Discovering significant people, places and events
Rochelle Bush
From 10 to 11 a.m., join Niagara College alumna and recipient of the NC Distinguished Alumni Award, Rochelle Bush for a talk that will highlight three centuries of Black history in Niagara. Owner of Tubman Tours Canada, Bush’s talk will cover significant events, abolitionist activity, notable Underground Railroad freedom seekers and important structures all of which are featured on Niagara’s Freedom Trail.
This hybrid event will be delivered via Zoom and at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake in room N018. Please register.

Art exhibit:
The exhibit showcases the brilliance and diversity of Black artistry, reflecting the past, present, and futures of Black experiences and excellence. The student artwork is presented alongside Nadine Williams’ The Fabric of Our Being quilt installation and is on display at the Welland Campus Library and Learning Commons.
Black Student Association
NC’s Black Student Association is active this term, focused on community, connection, and celebrating Black culture. They organize social and cultural events and service projects.

- Celebrate Canadian perspectives from Black filmmakers with the NFB. Explore their free collection of titles from Black filmmakers across Canada.
