Emancipation Day, recognized annually on August 1, marks the anniversary of the Slavery Abolition Act of 1834, which ended slavery in most of the British Empire. It is a time to honour the strength, resilience, and contributions of Black communities across Canada.
NC is proud to once again sponsor local events hosted by Matter of Black (MOB) in St. Catharines commemorating Emancipation Day.

Saturday, July 20 – Walk to Freedom
In partnership with Downtown St. Catharines and Tubman Tours Canada, this guided walk explores the rich local history of the Underground Railroad and the significant role St. Catharines played as a haven for those seeking freedom. Participants will trace the steps of formerly enslaved people who found refuge and built new lives in the city. The walk offers a powerful, immersive experience that connects the past to the present.
Thursday, July 25 – SOUL Film Screening
In collaboration with FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre, join the community for an evening screening of SOUL, a film that captures the rhythms and reflections of Black identity and creativity. Stay for a post-film discussion exploring themes of resilience, expression, and cultural legacy. This event blends art and dialogue, providing a space for collective reflection and conversation.
Friday, July 26 – Salem Chapel Tours & Talks
Presented by Tubman Tours Canada, this special day of programming at the historic Salem Chapel BME Church, a National Historic Site, offers guided tours and speaker sessions that explore the legacy of Harriet Tubman and the Black community in Niagara. Discover the stories of leadership, resistance, and faith that shaped this vital part of Canadian history.
Sunday, July 27 – Emancipation Day STC at Lakeside Park
The week culminates in a full-day community celebration at Lakeside Park. From 12 p.m. until dusk, the park will come alive with the sounds of steel pan, live musical performances, and African drumming. Join in Soca Fit and Afrobeat dance lessons, play traditional games, and explore a vibrant vendor market featuring local artisans and businesses. Pack a picnic or enjoy food from local food trucks, and spend the day lakeside immersed in the spirit of freedom, culture, and joy.
