June is National Indigenous History Month (NIHM), an opportunity to acknowledge and learn about the rich history, culture and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. It is also a time for Canadians across the country to reflect on reconciliation efforts and to work towards creating a more just and equitable society.
In celebration of National Indigenous History Month, Niagara College’s Indigenous Education department will lead a host of events that honour Indigenous ways of knowing, doing and being. These events will offer the entire College community the opportunity to learn about the history of Indigenous communities in Canada, celebrate the rich and diverse culture of those communities, support NC’s body of Indigenous students, and promote the reconciliation process in Canada and the College.

Wild Popping Rice

Join Indigenous Education and Transition Coordinator Sandra Mandamin by the fire as she pops Manoomin, sharing teachings on its harvest, preparation and cultural significance for the Anishinaabeg people. Enjoy a taste of this traditional food with cinnamon and maple syrup. Register here.
Indigenous History Month Paint Party: Métis Dot Art Edition

Métis Dot Art is a vibrant and colorful painting style inspired by traditional Métis beadwork. Known for their stunning floral designs, Métis people have long expressed their connection to the land through intricate patterns. Dot Art honors these rich traditions, reflecting the beauty and symbolism of nature. This workshop is a wonderful opportunity to explore the Dot Art style, try something new, relax, and connect with the land and community. All supplies are provided. Register here.

Indigenous History Month – Strawberry Social

Deadly Yoga

In honour of Indigenous Peoples Day, you are invited to connect with the land in the Indigenous Garden and calm your mind through a gentle yoga and breathwork practice. This practice is for all bodies, all genders, all abilities, and all levels of yoga experience. Participants are encouraged to bring their own yoga mat, as limited mats and props will be available. *Real deadly is a slang word known amongst Indigenous peoples in Canada to describe something as awesome, excellent, or great. Indigenous Education Paint Party
