Dental Assisting students will usher in the first full week of March by putting their oral health education into action for Dental Assistants Recognition Week (DARW) March 2-9.
In honour of DARW, more than 40 Dental Assisting students will host in-person festivities in the AHI foyer (Welland Campus) on Wednesday, March 5 and will promote oral health awareness with a social media throughout the week.
“Dental Assistant Week celebrates the vital role of dental assistants in oral healthcare and highlights the connection between oral and overall health,” said Dental Professor Jennifer Karnay. “It’s a time for recognition, education and fostering a sense of community within the dental team with the patients we support.”
At the in-person festivities on March 5, students will be ready to share what they have learned on various oral health-related topics – including tips and tricks tailored to different community groups – through educational displays, presentations, games, samples and prizes. The entire College community is welcome to drop-in between 9:30-11 a.m.
“This integrated learning experience strengthens their communication and critical thinking abilities, essential for success in the dental practice,” said Karnay.
Throughout the week, the DA students will be taking their message online to help educate their followers on related oral health topics, offer practical advice, and acknowledge the essential contributions of dental assistants. They will use the hashtag #daweek2025 on various social media platforms.
“We’re committed to promoting oral health in our community. We continually explore new ways to raise awareness and encourage healthy oral hygiene habits,” said Karnay. “We believe a healthy community starts with healthy smiles. That’s why we’re dedicated to raising oral health awareness and promoting practices that lead to better overall health for everyone.”
Held annually during the first week of March, DARW is designated by the Canadian Dental Assistants Association as a time for the public to recognize members of the profession.
NC’s one-year Dental Assisting program is based at the Welland Campus. Students gain hands on, real-world experience at the NC Dental Clinic which provides dental health services to the College community and the local residents.
