Niagara College celebrated the achievements of some of its brightest students from around the world at the Fall 2024 International Student Awards Night on November 21, 2024.
Each term, NC recognizes international students who demonstrate academic excellence and contribute to the College community through its International Student Awards. Last fall, thanks to the generous contributions of NC’s supporters, 29 awards and over $25,000 CAD in scholarships were given.
Senior Director of Global Business Development, Gary Torraville, and Senior Director of International Students, Shawna Luey, participated in the event held at The Core, on the Welland Campus. Director of International Students, Fernando Gama, was the night’s master of ceremonies.
International Business student Gustavo Ferreira Comonian, who is originally from Brazil, accepted the Niagara College Student Administrative Council (NCSAC) International Student Award. The award is offered to a student who displays academic excellence and who participates in extra-curricular and volunteer opportunities with NCSAC, enriching their student experience.
“During my time at NC, I have gained valuable experience working across three departments and volunteering to help students,” said Comonian. “I love connecting with people, participating in events, and creating lasting memories with friends and colleagues. As I finish my program, I hope to continue helping and interacting with people in my future career.”
Originally from the Philippines, Electronics Engineering Technician student Edward Amoyen Abella was one of the recipients of the Global University Systems (GUS) Canada Scholarship. This scholarship is given to two returning international students in any program of study with outstanding academic excellence.
“I am deeply honored to be an international student, a student assistant, a peer tutor, an academic integrity ambassador at NC, and a recipient of this scholarship,” said Abella. “Moving to Canada has been both a challenge and a tremendous opportunity for growth. Niagara College has provided me with invaluable skills through the program and a welcoming community that feels like home.”
Horticultural Technician student Betiana Celeste Grammatico was one of the winners of the Dr. Mary Kilmer Tchalekian Scholarship, given to two students with excellent academic performance who aim to make a difference upon returning to their home countries.
“I believe that the program I am taking at Niagara College is key to promoting eco-friendly education for future generations,” said Grammatico, who is originally from Argentina. “As a busy mom, student, and worker, it means so much to have my passion and efforts recognized.”
During the evening, NC also awarded 12 Academic Awards for students who earned the highest Grade Point Average (GPA) in their schools of study. Additionally, 12 other students were recognized with Keith Segal – guard.me scholarships for their outstanding academic achievements. One student who received the award, funded by Guard.me, the provider of international student insurance coverage, was Commercial Beekeeping student Bhupinderjeet Kaur.
“My experience at Niagara College has been incredible, filled with learning and personal growth,” said Kaur, who is originally from India. “This achievement motivates me to continue striving for excellence and pursue my future goal of making a meaningful impact in my field.”
The International Student Awards Night highlights the exceptional achievements of Niagara College’s global community of students, celebrating their resilience, dedication, and contributions that enrich the NC experience and inspire others through their academic and personal journeys.
