What do Michael Myers from Halloween, Jason Voorhees of Friday the 13th, and Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street have in common?

NC professor Kevin McGuiness examines these popular antagonists within the context of the folkloric Boogeyman in his new book, which will be in the limelight on the “Cine/ma Chat” vodcast (video podcast) this Halloween.

Through The Cinematic Boogeyman, McGuiness looks at the psychology of American horror films of the 1970s and 1980s. The book was released in September 2024, published by McFarland and Company, Inc.

“This is my first scholarly book and was prompted by my fascination with horror films and images of the Boogeyman found throughout Western art history,” said McGuiness.

A part-time Art History instructor within the School of Academic and Liberal Studies, McGuiness has been teaching at the College for eight years.

“This book directly relates to my area of teaching as it examines the history of monstrosity in painting, film and literature,” said McGuiness.

The “Cine/ma Chat” vodcast includes interviews with scholars and filmmakers discussing movie-related topics. It is hosted by Dr. Cristina Santos from Brock University, who McGuiness calls his mentor.

Don’t miss “Cine/ma Chat” on October 31 at 2 p.m. which will feature McGuiness discussing The Cinematic Bogeyman. A question-and-answer session will follow his 30-minute presentation.

The vodcast is open to the public and free. Access the video podcast here.
