Niagara College’s Libraries and Learning Commons is inviting students and employees to get into the holiday spirit early this year.

On July 25 from 1 to 2:30 p.m., the library is hosting an open house event in the Exploratory at Welland Campus where Christmas crafting will be on the agenda.

The Exploratory, a digital media lab and makerspace, features a range of innovative technology and software for students, staff and faculty. The space – located at both campuses – houses software and equipment for filming videos, recording audio, editing videos, designing graphics, virtual reality headsets, and equipment for creating marketing material and prototypes including a 3D printer, button maker, and Cricut machine, and more.

Those who drop by the open house will have the chance to create their own summer-themed Christmas cracker (while supplies last) using the Cricut Maker Explore 3, as well as Christmas-themed buttons using the various-sized button makers. The 3D Printer will also be on display printing snowflake Christmas ornaments for guests to take home (while supplies last).

There will be additional Christmas-themed items on display to give people an idea of what they can make using the specialized equipment including a new hat press, mug press, new sublimation printer and t-shirt press. Guests will also be able to explore other technology in the space including podcast equipment, a green screen and 3D scanner.

Siscoe Boschman, Library Facilitator, Info Literacy, says that students who use the Exploratory routinely state that space adds value to their college credential.

“The Exploratory provides a safe and welcoming environment for students to try new technologies in a failsafe environment,” said Boschman. “Some of the technology we provide would be cost prohibitive for most students to own, so it equalizes the playing field by giving everyone a chance to experiment with the technology that is going to shape their future and their career opportunities.”

In 2023, the Exploratory team was recognized with a President’s Award for Innovation in Student Learning and Success for their commitment to curating a space that promotes digital literacy and enables everyone to experiment with newer technologies.
