Joel Pruden admits he wasn’t a very good student when he was younger. He was easily distracted and his grades reflected it.
When he entered the General Arts and Science Program at Niagara College as a mature student, though, things were different. He was able to focus more with the limited time he had available for his coursework, and he credits his ability to “focus on the end goal” and prioritize his time for his success at college.
What he didn’t expect was to finish the program with the highest grade-point average in the School of Academic and Liberal Studies, for which he’s earned the Dean’s Award.
“I am honoured to receive this award,” Pruden said. “I am humbled to be (singled) out of many others who worked hard in their programs.”
Pruden, who is working full-time in Niagara and also serving part-time with the Canadian Forces, chose NC because of the flexibility it provided for him to complete his studies remotely, and his program created a good stepping stone for future education.
“The major challenge for me was time,” he said of his experience at NC. “As a father of three working full time, I had to ensure time was made to complete the courses within the deadline. I had lots of help from my wife and family to allow me to succeed. Balancing courses, working shift work – as well as part time with the Canadian Forces- meant I was busy. Like many other students balancing a course load (and) employment, it’s important to stay focused and work with the time you have available.”
Ahead of his convocation on June 14, Pruden spoke of what it has meant to him to study at NC and his plans for the future.

Academic achievement: Dean’s Award Winner, School of Academic and Liberal Studies
Did you have a specific career goal in mind when you enrolled in your program?
I was looking to complete post-secondary to open my options for promotion and advancement with my (current) employer. I also wanted to get back into the mindset of being a student as I wish to pursue further courses to expand my post-secondary education.
How did you find your program experience?
I completed my program completely online which was a huge benefit and one of the deciding factors for the selection of my program and studying at Niagara College. The flexibility that it provided while working two jobs and dealing with busy family life was perfect. I thought the lessons were well put together, the staff was knowledgeable and easy to communicate with, and the program delivery was easy to navigate and understand.
Do you feel your NC experience has helped prepare you for the future?
Absolutely. Even coming to school later in life, there is always more to learn and I found myself learning lots of interesting, new information, as well as refining some skills that have faded with time. I continued to learn how to manage my time, meet deadlines and prioritize work. The program helped me focus on goals and think about my future beyond school, within my current career and beyond.
What have you been doing since you completed your studies at NC?
I have still been working within my career here in Niagara and spending time with my family. I recently completed a long career course with the Canadian Forces and continue to serve part-time.
What’s next for you?
I am looking at advancing within my career and continuing my education, focusing on leadership training.
