For Renalyn Santianez, convocation isn’t just a ceremony, it’s a celebration of the hard work she’s put in as an international student, and a reminder of the endless opportunities that await her now that she holds a diploma in Tourism Management-Business Development.
“Before enrolling in my program, my (goal) was simply to be part of an industry I enjoyed – and that hasn’t changed a bit,” said Santianez, who grew up in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, Philippines. “If anything, my passion for the tourism industry has grown stronger as I’ve gained knowledge through the program. Looking ahead, my career goal is still all about making my mark in the tourism industry. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me after graduation!”
The journey so far has been a rewarding one for Santianez, who had the “unforgettable experience” of travelling to Europe to explore Portugal for eight days as part of the College’s Be World Ready program. She was also selected as Niagara College’s Baxter Student Ambassador, which recognizes the industry’s most promising student talent in tourism and hospitality programs at Canadian colleges and universities.
Based on a combination of her academic success, industry ad community involvement, leadership skills and the results of a skill-testing project, Santianez was singled out for the Baxter Student Ambassador Program. It’s one of the things she said she’ll always cherish from her time at NC.
“It truly opened doors and helped me build the connections I need to break into the tourism industry,” she said. “During my time at Niagara College, I was really into community volunteering. I helped out at events like the Niagara Ice Wine Festivals and the Niagara Museum Night of Art. It was awesome because I got to meet locals and see life from their perspective. Plus, knowing I was making a positive impact in the area felt really rewarding. Being part of those events was such a highlight, and I learned a lot while having a great time.”
Santianez also benefitted from a one-semester co-op experience that put her in the heart of Niagara Falls. It’s another way she felt NC set her up for success by providing her with “the right connections in the industry and a perfect environment to grow.”
Working as a front desk receptionist at a hotel allowed her to meet people from all over the world who would tell her about their travel experiences, she said. “It gave me a first-hand look at the tourism industry in action.”
Even the difficult parts of college turned into something to be proud of.
“I think the most challenging part for me was managing my finances, especially since I was solely supporting myself,” Santianez said. “I had to work really hard to cover all my expenses and tuition fees. But it was all worth it because I can proudly say that I made it to the finish line.”
Now that she’s crossed it, Santianez said she’ll take all that she’s learned over the last two years to establish herself in the tourism industry and pursue her dream job of joining a top tourism destination company.
“My experience at NC has been truly remarkable. The supportive atmosphere here has really helped me grow personally, especially by boosting my confidence and communication skills. I used to be quite shy in class, but now I’m proud to be a Baxter Student Ambassador for the college. It’s been a huge improvement for me. Overcoming challenges and taking on leadership roles has taught me so much and made me feel more professional.
“Overall, NC has given me everything I need to step confidently into the working world. I’m thankful for all the experiences and friendships I’ve gained here, and I feel ready to take on whatever challenges come my way in the industry.”
