The NC Teaching Brewery has rolled out two beers in honour of the upcoming total solar eclipse.
The eclipse-inspired brews include Path of Totality, a 4.8 % abv. Bavarian Schwarzbier ( Black Lager) , and The Dark Side.is a “very black Stout” 4,2% abv;.
Recipes for both were created by Downing. who used bitterless, huskless black malts to create a depth of colour.
“The opportunity to brew a beer for an event like this is pretty rare so I wanted to create two very dark brews which still matched to specific styles,” said Brewmaster professor Jon Downing.
Downing has shared the recipes via social media hoping that other brewers in the path of the eclipse may wish to brew them for the rare celesrial event. At NC,both beers were brewed in class by first- and third-semester students in the College’ s Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program.
Downing described the Path of Totality beer as ” crisp with a very light roast malt background, balanced noble hop and light body.,”
The Dark Side is a very Black Stout” was made with eight malts and one hop “to create this intensely complex yet light beer a toffee, chocolate, dry and roasty balanced with flaked oats to smooth out the finish, crisp with a very light roast malt background, balanced noble hop and light body,” he said.
The brews are available for purchase while supplies last the the Wine Visitor + Education Centre, located at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake, alongside other products from NC’s Teaching Brewery, Teaching Winery, and Teaching Distillery. Visit www.ncteachingwinery.ca/.
