This is the first of a series of three articles about NC’s IEW 2023 activities.
Niagara College showcased an exciting series of events during International Education Week (IEW) that left students, faculty, and staff filled with enthusiasm while celebrating diversity, cooperation, and the transformative power of global education.

Originally from Ecuador, NC student Roberto Villao was excited to shared information about his country in a Culture Sharing Table.
From November 20 to 24, NC’s Global Engagement team offered two online webinar series specifically tailored for staff, faculty, and global partners, providing valuable insights on the impact of international education in preparing world-ready learners.
During this engaging period, a partnership between NC’s International Student Services and Niagara College Student Administrative Council (NCSAC) presented a food and culture fest to students at both the Welland Campus and Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Culture Sharing Tables
The week’s highlight for students was the Culture Sharing Tables, where more than twenty students and staff from different nationalities and backgrounds proudly showcased their unique cultures and traditions through games, dance, music, treats, clothing, and pictures from their respective countries.

Students enjoyed free hot breakfasts served all week long with food and coffee from diverse parts of the globe.
Participating students represented various nations, including Canada, China, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, India, Lebanon, the Philippines, Thailand, Venezuela, and Vietnam.
Originally from Ecuador, Bachelor of Business Administration student Roberto Villao was filled with excitement as he shared information about his country in a Culture Sharing Table at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
“Representing Ecuador in the International Education Week was a fantastic experience,” said Villao. “It was a joy to see fellow students from other parts of the world and NC staff stopping by the booth with genuine interest and appreciation for Ecuador’s rich heritage.”
Hospitality – Hotel and Restaurants Operations student Rohan Patel, who is originally from India, had an enlightening experience exploring the Culture Sharing Tables. Patel was particularly interested in the booth centred around China, hosted by NC’s International Student Advisor Sofia Gu, who is originally from China.
“I am fascinated by Chinese culture and have particularly enjoyed playing games and tasting treats from China,” said Patel. “It was an enriching experience to be brought closer to different perspectives in the Culture Sharing Tables throughout the week.”
Food, sports, and parties
Students also enjoyed free Rise and Shine hot breakfasts served all week long with food and coffee from diverse parts of the globe, such as Africa, Asia, the Middle East, South America, and Southeast Asia.

NC’s International Student Advisor Sofia Gu, who is originally from China, hosted a Culture Sharing Table.
On the evening of November 20, two simultaneous IEW launch parties with international food and music took place at both campuses. On November 23, NC’s IEW included basketball games at the Simplii Financial Athletic Center at the Welland Campus, featuring both men’s and women’s teams. The Niagara Knights showcased their talents and the NC community enthusiastically cheered for both games, followed by a lively party with a DJ and finger food.
The IEW 2023 fostered a sense of community and provided a platform for cultural exchange, creating lasting memories for everyone involved.
