Due to Remembrance Day falling on Saturday this year, Niagara College will observe Remembrance Day on Friday, November 10 to honour the service and sacrifice of the men and women of our armed forces throughout history.
College flags will be lowered on November 10 and a short service will take place over the public address system at both campuses at 11 a.m. The service will begin with the playing of The Last Post, followed by a reading of the John McCrae poem In Flanders Fields and one minute of silence.
Those working or learning remotely are also encouraged to pause at this time to join colleagues and students participating in this important service of remembrance to acknowledge the people who have served, and continue to serve Canada, during times of conflict and peace.
Members of the NC community will be attending Remembrance Day services on November 11 to lay wreaths at local cenotaphs. Gary Torraville, Senior Director, International, will visit the Fairview Cemetery Cenotaph in Niagara Falls, Sean Coote, Vice-President, International, will represent the College at the Welland Cenotaph, Dorita Pentesco, Interim Vice-President, Student Affairs, will visit the Queen Street Cenotaph in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Lindsey Hendriks and Carly Root from NC’s Community Relations and Events Department will attend the Highway 20 East Cenotaph in Fonthill.
Faculty and students from the Broadcasting – Radio, Television and Film program have partnered with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 613 to once again livestream the Legion’s Remembrance Day service in Fonthill on Saturday, beginning at 10:45 a.m.
On November 6, the Library and Learning Commons, in partnership with Indigenous Education, also hosted a living library event in honour of Indigenous Veterans Day. The day is observed annually across Canada on November 8 to commemorate the contributions of the thousands of Indigenous peoples who have served their country in times of war, conflict and peace.
