On October 25, Niagara College hosted the 2023 Niagara Climate Change Summit alongside partners at the Niagara Region, Brock University and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority.
The climate action event was a forum to discuss energy resilience and carbon reduction efforts with local energy leaders, municipalities, organizations, environmental groups and businesses.
“Niagara College is a proud supporter of the Climate Change Summit and the sustainability efforts happening across the region through the Niagara Climate Change Action Network,” said NC President Sean Kennedy in a news release. “We have a shared commitment to local climate change action and the transition to a low carbon economy, and the Summit is an important forum for those discussions.”
Participants heard from speakers about clean energy initiatives in the province that were achieved through collaboration.
Among the speakers, NC’s Taryn Wilkinson, Manager, Sustainability, moderated a panel.
“Some highlights from what we discussed include engaging diverse stakeholders, challenges to implement community energy plans, and new skills and competencies needed in the sector,” said Wilkinson.
Danielle Notarianni, Manager, Energy and Assets, Nicolette Nastopoulos, Sustainability Operations and Reporting Coordinator attended alongside NC students Sierra Savoie (Environmental Management and Assessment) and Lebert Omac (Ecosystem Restoration).
Information gathered from the Summit will help to inform a Niagara Region Community Energy Plan, a collective vision to work towards a more sustainable and resilient future for our communities.
