There was an outpouring of excitement at the NC Teaching Brewery on August 10 with a visit from representatives from the U.S. Open College Beer Championship.

The fact that NC clinched the Grand National Champion title along with five medals at the 2023 U.S. Open College Beer Championship drew competition directors Tom Streeter and Carla Gesell-Streeter to visit Niagara College’s Teaching Brewery and hand out awards to the class of 10 final term Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management students in person.

Every beer that the College’s Teaching Brewery entered in this year’s competition achieved a medal  including:

  • Gold for Echoes in the Taproom, a Belgian Dubbel beer made by the entire class of 10 final-term students. Each school was invited to submit a beer from this year’s specified specific category – which was Belgian Dubbel for 2023 – to be judged head-to-head according to the U.S. Open style standards;
  • Gold for Hulk Roggan, which also tied for Best of Show; a historical beer created by final term Brewmaster student Gian Raina Armas; (Cuba/ Niagara Falls);
  • Silver for Taylor Rd. Saison, made by final term Brewmaster student Marye Anne Chisholm (Stevensville, Ontario);
  • silver for Te-Toiset Bois Belgian Tripel, by final term Brewmaster student Santiago Hernan Ampudia Vasquez (Ecuador/ Thorold); and
  • bronze for T’Weiss as Nice’ German Wheat Ale, by final term Brewmaster student Jenny Lukasiewicz (Port Edward, Ontario) .

The same class of students behind these award-winning brews at the U.S. Open College Championship are hosting Project Brew Augtoberfest on August 11. The Bavarian themed student-organized beer festival will offer guests of the ticketed event a taste of 13 student-crafted brews. The event will be held on August 11 (5-9 p.m.) at NC’s Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The gold-medal-winning class beer, Echoes in the Taproom, will be one of the featured brews at Project Brew Augtoberfest.

“That beer was pro level,” said Streeter. “The thing is, the competition this year was really one of the stronger ones we ever had.”

“We had judges that were really high level… and they were really impressed,” said Gesell-Streeter.

With dry weather in the forecast, additional tickets are now available for the previously sold-out event. For info visit projectbrew.squarespace.com.

Steve Gill (GM, NCLEC), Fiona Allan (VP Academic) and Craig Youdale (Dean, Culinary, Tourism and Beverage Studies) join Brewmaster Professor Jon Downing, and Directors of the U.S. Open College Beer Championship Carla Gesell-Streeter and Tom Streeter to honour final-term Brewmaster students with their awards.
