Niagara College's cricket team celebrates after winning the June 28 OCR tournament hosted by Conestoga College in Waterloo.

On the heels of winning the Niagara Cricket Cup on June 6 and an Ontario Collegiate Recreation (OCR) tournament on June 28, Niagara College’s Cricket team is looking to continue its successful season this summer.

On July 11, the team will play in its second OCR tournament, which is being hosted by NC at the Niagara Cricket Centre (5114 Thorold Townline Rd., Thorold). Participating colleges also include Mohawk, Sheridan and St. Lawrence.

“The Niagara College Knights cricket team has been having a tremendous season and we are looking forward to seeing what else they can achieve before the season ends,” said Geoffrey Benoit, Intercollegiate Coordinator. “We are proud of the students for all that they have accomplished not only on the pitch, but off the pitch as well. The team has been incredible to watch as they have created a family-like atmosphere in just a few short months.”

NC’s cricket team was formed earlier this year in response to a strong student demand and interest in more cricket programming at the College, and with support from the Athletics and Student Engagement and International departments.

Led by Captain Aakash Arora and Vice-Captain Ishan Patel, the 15-player team is made up of international students representing multiple countries and speaking five different languages. Patel, who recently graduated from the General Arts and Science program, plans to play professional cricket at the national level.

Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to come out to the Niagara Cricket Centre on July 11 to cheer on the team!

Matches start at 8 a.m. and run all day. NC’s cricket team plays at 8 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The tournament is a round robin format with the top two teams playing in the finals beginning at 6:30 p.m. There is no cost for fans to attend the events and backyard games (washer toss, bean bag toss, etc.) will be set up for fans to play.

Shuttles leaving from both campuses will be available for students who would like to attend the 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. games to cheer on the team. Pick up from Welland at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. and from NOTL at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
