Growing up in a family of doctors, nurses and pharmacists, Patricia Sabay naturally gravitated toward medical science.
At NC, she found a place to explore her love of science and a way to expand her knowledge base. Though it was sometimes tough to balance her studies with work and family, Sabay said it’s her son who inspires her to keep moving forward.
We caught up with Sabay ahead of her June 15 convocation ceremony to find out what her time at NC has meant to her, and what her plans are after graduation.

Academic achievement: Dean’s Award Winner, School of Academic and Liberal Studies
How do you feel about your upcoming convocation day. What does it personally mean to you?
I am excited about my upcoming convocation day. As a full-time mom and student who achieved this GPA, I know that I can conquer any battles that may come along.
How do you feel about receiving the Dean’s Award and achieving the highest GPA in your program?
I was surprised because I thought I could not do so. These past years were troublesome.
What inspires you to succeed?
My son is the only one who keeps me grounded and makes me pursue better circumstances for our future.
What led you to study at NC and to your program of study?
We recently moved from Toronto to Fort Erie. Coming from a city with reliable public transportation, I did not learn to drive until we lived in a remote area. This program was convenient because all the courses were online.
Why are you passionate about your field?
I have always loved medical science because I am passionate about caring for people–especially my loved ones.
Did you have a specific career goal when you enrolled in your program?
My family comes from generations of doctors, nurses, and pharmacists. I always knew that I loved science more than anything else.
What did you find rewarding about your program?
Believe it or not, my grades were not [what were] rewarding during my studies at NC. It was about broadening my knowledge in any subject matter–not just science-related courses.
How did you find your program experience? Did you face and overcome any challenges to graduate?
It was very fast-tracked. I learned to be independent and manage my time wisely. I had to juggle my studies, career and family.
Do you feel your NC experience has helped prepare you for the future?
I do, because of the different challenges the courses have given me. Despite doing it online, I liked it when I still got to meet others.
What have you been doing since you completed your studies at NC?
I am enrolled at Brock University for a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.
What’s next for you? Are you working or planning to pursue further education?
I want to graduate with a BSc stronger than ever, and maybe get a higher GPA than I did at NC. Also, I have always dreamed of living in Paris since I was a child.
