Mechanical Engineering Technician graduate Gabriel Hudlin was initially drawn to the hands-on learning experience NC offers but is leaving with so much more, including new friends, lifelong memories and a community he is proud to be a part of. We catch up with Hudlin to find out what he loved most about his time at NC.
Tell us why you came to NC and how your dream has evolved?
I came to Niagara College because of its hands on learning approach that introduces students to the machines and systems used in today’s mechanical industry. I have always been interested in making things like ATVs and Go Karts but never had access to a workshop or machinery for me to gain hands-on experience to build them. Niagara College gave me both the education and the hands-on experience I desired.
Tell us your favourite non-academic NC memory
One of my favourite school memories is working with the NCSAC Rise and Shine Breakfast Program. I made so many friends and met so many personalities while giving out breakfast to staff and students. Sharing such a positive atmosphere is a great way to start the day.
What is one thing you experienced at NC that you didn’t expect?
I didn’t expect to work for NCSAC. I always saw the team around during many student activities and helping at various events, but I never expected myself to join the team. It was only by chance while hanging out with my friend who was organizing the breakfast program that I got to meet and talk with NCSAC Manager, Andy Hall who convinced me to join the team. I’m so happy I accepted Andy’s offer since it ended up making my college experience all the more enjoyable.
Now that you’re starting your career, what tools did NC give you to set you apart from your peers?
As I’m getting ready to enter the workforce, I look forward to adding computer literacy, engineering drawing documentation and interpretation, GD&T 3-D modelling, CNC and Robotics coding and operations to my resume. I know these skills will set me apart from other candidates.
Who would you like to thank for helping make your NC journey and dream a reality?
I would like to thank my mom who first introduced me to the College, my family for allowing me the opportunity to attend, and my professors for their unrelenting efforts to ensure we understood each lesson, prepared us for the modern industry world and challenged our minds to think of all that can be done with our learnings. Finally, I would like to thank the NCSAC team and staff for making my every day College experience much more meaningful and enjoyable.
What is your dream job? If you’ve already landed it, what is it?
My dream job is any job where my efforts contribute to making other lives better.
