I am pleased to share that the Niagara College Business Plan and Budget for 2023-2024 has been finalized and approved. This is a sound and visionary financial blueprint that leverages our considerable momentum and provides for significant investments to help achieve the goals of our Strategic Plan, while supporting and sustaining continued future growth.
With increased enrolments, years of strong financial management and the ongoing success of our revenue diversification strategies, the 2023-2024 budget projects a surplus. Thanks to the work of the entire NC community, this favourable budgetary position allows the College to reinvest and create new opportunities for our students, faculty and staff. The budget also includes important investments in our facilities, equipment and new learning resources.
The continued demand for NC programs and our global growth supports our ability to continue building our team and to make historic investments in our people. Over the past 18 months, we have welcomed more than 150 new employees to expand our teaching, research and services for students, and will continue to add to our employee complement in 2023-2024.
Strong enrolments
The demand for Niagara College programs and the unique college experience that we provide has never been stronger. In May, we will welcome the largest spring term intake in NC’s history. Over the course of 2023-2024 we expect a record 13,000 students at the Welland Campus and the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake through expanded marketing, recruitment and access programs; new program offerings and delivery modes; improved pathways; and the continued diversification of international student enrolment across all programs.
Investing in our students, our technology and our facilities
This enrolment momentum enables the College to make significant investments in facilities, technology, equipment and learning environments, to position ourselves for the future and the evolving needs of our learners and colleagues.
We will undertake significant technology, furniture and design upgrades to classrooms and common spaces – and some of this important work is already underway. The budget allocates $2.5 million to this rejuvenation effort. Project Refresh will take important strides to reimagine our spaces for the future and to utilize our circulation areas to tell the myriad of NC stories that make NC so special. From showcases of student work, to employee and alumni successes, visual representations of our stories will reflect the dynamic energy of our campuses.
We are investing in a new Learning Management System (LMS), recognizing that teaching and learning needs have evolved significantly. Following a robust review, consultation and proposal process, a new, modernized digital platform will enable enhanced academic program delivery and expanded collaboration.
The College has also finalized and will soon embark on an updated Master Plan. This multi-year plan will see significant capital upgrades and expansions at the Welland Campus and the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake over the next decade.
The Dream Big Fund, introduced in 2022-2023 to support and cultivate trailblazing ideas that support the key areas of focus in our Strategic Plan, will continue in 2023-2024. To date, this fund has invested more than $1.5 million in initiatives and ideas to enhance the student experience, foster academic excellence, support the development of people, expand experiential learning, and more. As we enter the second year of the Strategic Plan, the 2023-2024 Business Plan and Budget support the goals and action items contained in the plan, as well as those in the new NC Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Blueprint. As the postsecondary landscape continues to change, we will harness the momentum we’ve gathered in the wake of challenging times, and our trailblazing spirit, to move our College forward as we pursue our vision to enrich lives and fulfill dreams.
